The questions we start from

Six questions about what you want funded, before any call is chosen.

A funding strategy says which open calls are worth your institution's time over the next one to three years, and which to decline. These are the six things we cannot read from the public record, and they are the ones the judgement rests on.

This is the stage before a project outline. If you already know which call you are applying to, work through Project Strategy Builder instead: it has eighteen questions, it is free, and it asks what a proposal has to settle once the call is chosen.

IWhat you want funded

  1. Name the group or lab behind each one. Three to six, not a list of everything you do: the ranking compares a call against the themes you give, so themes nobody is funding make the comparison less useful, not more.

  2. Coordination is a job, not a title, and it is the single biggest claim on your time in any project. We check what you say here against how many projects the Commission records you coordinating.

IIWhat you can actually carry

  1. People, facilities, ethics or data approvals, access to patients or samples, a partner you do not have. The published record shows what you have done, never what you are currently able to start.

  2. Funders or topics you will not work on, a grant size below which the overhead is not worth it, roles your institution cannot take, and anything you have already submitted and lost, so it is not handed back to you. Half of what you are buying is which calls to decline: this is the half we cannot see from the record.

IIIWho you are already connected to

  1. Names and countries as far as you know them. We read these against the Commission's record of who you have actually been funded with, in both directions: the ones you named and never worked with, and the ones you worked with and did not name.

  2. Programme committees, advisory groups, national, European and international technology platforms, open public consultations. This is the only item on this form whose payoff comes before a call is written rather than after.
